Hi Everyone I have added a new page called Rheumatoid Arthritis Information. It is actually a question and answer page. We willl see how it goes and if it becomes too big, I’ll have to find some other way of managing it. Just remember, although I am a holistic health therapist, I don’t have a standard medical degree so what you read on the Q & A page should not be taken as medical advice. So please always run any ideas past your doctor or health care provider before implementing them. There is a lot of advice about RA on the web and some of it is conflicting, so just be a bit careful, OK?
The correct rheumatoid arthritis treatments can vary from person to person, so advice that suits one person may not be suitable for another. However the diet and health advice is sound for everyone.
Welcome to the rheumatoid arthritis information page. Names have been changed to protect the identity of the readers.
Q -Is RA an indication that there could be any organs attacked by this autoimmune disease? Im having RA right now and i hope it doesn’t affect other organ. Thanks for the relief.
A – Hi Julie
I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and hope your doctor has started you on an appropriate management program. The sooner RA is caught and managed, the less risk of other complications developing such as the other organs being affected.
What may be a good plan is to wait until things are under control, then go and talk to a naturopath for some natural ways to improve your immune system function. This will provide the best hope of remission.
While there have been some advances in conventional medication for RA don’t just rely on that. Always look after your health as well.
Good luck!
Q – I found your article because I am searching for a more natural way to help my daughter control her RA. She currently is taking Enbrel and Arava. the Arava scared me when she started taking it and now (approx 6 weeks after starting) she has mouth ulcers that keep multiplying. Her RA dr always says fear the diesease not the medication but I am no longer buying that because she is so miserable with these mouth sores that keep popping up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have been researching all night. I think a tempurpedic mattress might be in the future for her and more fresh food (although my son is a health nut so we cook most stuff from scratch).
Her inflamation rate has not been normal since she was diagonosed. She was doing great on the arava until the mouth sores started. She has previously taken methotrexate and plaquinil and has a lot of fatigue and pain. She also has PCOS with insulin resistence which makes it extremely hard for her to lose
weight and the RA makes her so fatigued that exercise is a real challenge. She also has polychondritis which was helped with the arava. I’m just looking for any suggestions for a more natural way to contol all of this. (she is 26 and her fingers are starting to twist). Thank you for a great web site.
A - Hi Sally, so sorry your daughter is suffering in this way. I have included some info on good natural inflammation blockers against the enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, the following also have the ability to block 5-lipoxygenase which can increase leukotrienes in the body. Look for the following…
Celery seed, turmeric, rosemary, ginger, holy basil, barberry and Chinese skullcap. The first two seem to have the strongest action and are perfectly harmless.
Sounds like your daughter’s diet is good with plenty of fresh food. Steer clear of white flour, sugar and processed foods if possible. Aquarobics can help for exercise. Finally have to say I’m not qualified to give medical advice, my training is in holistic health. However, never forget that good holistic rheumatoid arthritis information is very valuable.
Q – hi i have rheumatoid arthritis my specialist had me on different drugs nothing was working he then put me on arvara it seems now that my white cells are down to nothing i don’t know when to go to the hospital i am sick my stomach is like a big blob of acic my other dr had me on seriquel 200xr and gabapenton i am so sore now can’t sleep ready for the loony pin please try and help . ty carol
A - Dear Carol
Oh dear, I’m so sorry!
Have you just been diagnosed? If so it can take some time to get the balance of meds right. Are you seeing 2 doctors at the moment, or have you just changed doctors? Is one of your doctors a rheumatologist or a specialist in rheumatoid arthritis? It’s best to have just one medical doctor and make sure you interact closely with them and report any symptoms as they occur.
You are taking quite a mixture of meds. Has the purpose of all these been explained to you? The Seroquel XR is for depression, Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant prescribed for epilepsy and is sometimes used for a condition called postherpetic neuralgia which can sometimes occur after an attack of shingles.
The only one that is specifically for rheumatoid arthritis is Arava. Arava is one of the family of DMARDs which slows joint damage and suppresses inflammation, but it takes some time before the effects can be felt.
Have you thought about going to see a natural doctor or naturopath? Doing so can give you some valuable information about your diet and the health of your immune system. I am attaching a pdf on natural pain relief for you to read in a separate email. It is not specifically for RA, but may help.
I hope you will soon feel better and feel free to contact me at any time.
